Approaching from the remote northern side near the Kenyan border, Rongai is one of the quietest routes on the mountain. Its steady, gentle gradient makes for excellent acclimatisation, and you'll share the trail with far fewer trekkers. A peaceful, scenic path to the Roof of Africa.

Climb to the strikingly beautiful tarn beneath Mawenzi's jagged spires.

Mawenzi Tarn → Kibo Hut
Cross the lunar saddle to Kibo Hut and rest for the summit attempt.

Summit → Horombo Hut
Pre-dawn ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), then descend the Marangu side to Horombo.

A final descent through moorland and forest to the finish.
